The old advice to buy the firmest mattress available doesn’t hold up under testing. Medium firmness, not maximum firmness, produced the stronger results in this trial. Innerspring mattresses wear out faster than foam. Sleep Foundation research puts the average innerspring lifespan at five and a half to six and a half years, the shortest of any mattress category. Coils lose tension with repeated use. Once they do, the surface sags and support drops.

Memory foam holds up longer. High-density foam, rated four pounds per cubic foot or higher, typically lasts seven to ten years. Budget foam under three pounds per cubic foot wears out faster and develops permanent body impressions within two to three years. Foam density, not brand name, predicts how long a mattress lasts.

Rotate any mattress every three to six months and add a protector to extend its working life, regardless of material.

Innerspring mattresses cost less upfront. Basic models start under $500, and even quality options with pocketed coils stay below premium foam pricing. Run the math over the mattress’s full lifespan instead of looking at sticker price alone. An innerspring mattress at $600, replaced every six years, costs $100 a year. A memory foam mattress at $1,200, lasting nine years, costs $133 a year. The gap narrows once you account for replacement frequency, though innerspring still wins on raw cost per year in most comparisons.

Safety Certifications Worth Checking

Foam mattresses release volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, when new, a process called off-gassing. Look for the CertiPUR-US label before buying memory foam.
